A method for clamping an annular tread to a pneumatic tire casing comprises mounting the casing on a wheel, mounting the annular tread on an axially moveable supporting device, the supporting device having radially and axially retractable means for selectively stretching the tread, stretching the annular tread to a size allowing it to circumferentially surround the casing by radially expanding the stretching means, moving the stretched annular tread axially toward the casing to a position where it circumferentially surrounds and is centered on the casing, clamping the stretched, annular tread to the casing by pressing on the radially outermost surface of the annular tread with a clamping means, retracting the clamping means, and transferring the annular tread from the supporting device onto the casing by moving the supporting device axially away from the casing.
