2098831 9212805 PCTABS00014 The adhesion and/or corrosion resistance of a autodeposited coating can be improved by rinsing the uncured coating with an aqueous treatment solution that has a pH between 7 and 11 and contains between 0.05 and 5 w/o of anions derived from phosphonic acids, preferably anions of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid. The method is particularly useful on leaf springs and other metallic objects with surfaces of high carbon and/or shot blasted steel, and is particularly useful in conjunction with an autodeposition bath containing internally stabilized poly [vinylidene chloride] latex, hydrofluoric acid, ferric fluoride, and hydrogen peroxide.
