ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention is directed to a process whereby a non-conductive substrate is prepared for electrostatic pre- treatment with a conductivity-improving composition. The invention also includes the prepared articles and the composition. The composition comprises an alkali metal hydroxide (less than 5 weight %) and a solvent system for the alkali metal hydroxide comprising a lower alkanol and a hydrocarbonaceous co-solvent. Production line electrostatic coating techniques can be used, and the residual solvent system does not generally have an adverse effect upon adherence of the coating to the substrate.
