ABSTRACT The invention concerns methods of improving the chemical resistance of porous anodic aluminium oxide membranes such as are used for filters. The membranes may simply be heated to temperatures above 650°C, typically 850 - 1250°C. Or a sol or solution of a metal compound in a volatile liquid may be applied to the membrane and decomposed to form a metal oxide coating on interior and exterior surfaces thereof, the coated membrane being heated to at least 100°C, preferably 250 - 650°C. Preferred coatings are oxides of Ta, Nb, Ti and Zr.
