The process to produce an absorbent wood fly ash. Wood is combusted to produce an exhaust and crude wood fly ash is collected from the exhaust. That crude wood fly ash is treated to eliminate dioxins and furans to produce the absorbent wood fly ash. Preferred method of treating the crude fly ash is by heating it at a temperature at least about 200°C. Method of absorbing the contaminate from the fluid is also described. That method comprises contacting the contaminated fluid with wood fly ash treated to remove dioxins and furans.
