A B S T R A C T Aluminous material such as furnace skim, drosses and residues is treated to recover aluminium metal. The material, preferably hot, is fed into a liquid salt flux layer floating on molten aluminium and agitated with the flux so that the metal passes into the molten aluminium. The process may be carried out in a forewell or sidewell of a reverberatory furnace or in a box divided into two compartments. The aluminous material may be added to a vessel with a hole in the bottom held in a body of molten aluminium, a flux layer being provided in the vessel.
