Abstract of the Disclosure A process is disclosed for treating aqueous rinsing solutions from zinc phosphat- ing processes on metallic surfaces. The solutions containing heavy metal ions are con- tacted with solid, strongly acid cation exchange resins containing sulfonic acid groups, and the heavy metal ions are then re-extracted from the loaded exchange resins by means of dilute, aqueous nitric acid or of a dilute, aqueous mixture of nitric acid/ phosphoric acid. The eluate from the regeneration is preferably returned to the phosphating bath.
