ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of treating cellular material, e.g. the surplus sludge from a fermenter, in which the cellular material is subjected to conditions which cause cell lysis thereby enabling at least a proportion of the lysis products to enter solution. Lysis can be caused by subjecting the cellular material to alkaline conditions.
