A therapeutic method of treating diarrhea of a patient, such as that caused by rotavirus in which a liquid suspension of one or more strains of Lactobacillus reuteri is administered to the patient. Preferably the L. reuteri is isolated from an animal of the same species as the animal to which the therapy is being given. Preferably at least about 10 7 cells of L. reuteri, and most preferably, at least 10 8 cells, are administered per day, over a period of one to seven days, depending on the severity of the gastroenteritis. The result is rapid, dramatic reduction in animal's diarrhea and vomiting, previously not found using other therapies.

La présente invention concerne un procédé thérapeutique permettant de traiter chez un sujet une diarrhée telle que celle provoquée par des rotavirus. Ce procédé consiste à administrer au sujet considéré une ou plusieurs souches de Lactobacillus reuteri en suspension liquide. On isole de préférence le L. reuteri chez un animal de la même espèce que l'animal auquel sera administrée la thérapie. La posologie préférée consiste en une administration quotidienne d'au moins environ 10<7> cellules de L. reuteri, mais de préférence au moins 10<8> cellules pendant une période de un à sept jours suivant la gravité de la gastro-entérite. Le résultat est une régression rapide et spectaculaire de la diarrhée et des vomissements que l'on n'a pas pu constater en utilisant d'autres thérapies.
