Patients suffering from a pathological condition resulting from HIV-infection are treated with N-(lower acyl) cysteine or a salt thereof. Particularly, N-acetyl cysteine compounds are employed to treat AIDS patients and alleviate symptoms such as weight loss and loss of physical strength. Use of N-acetyl cysteine compounds in conjunction with drugs that affect the pathogenesis of HIV-induced diseases can complement the effects of such drugs.
