A process is provided for selectively converting formaldehyde in an acidic organic waste aqueous stream in the most part to formose sugars rather than to alkali metal formate and methanol by reacting the stream with a strong alkali base to provide a pH of at least about 8.5 and heating the resulting basic solution to a temperature of at least about 80 ~C. The formaldehyde is present in the waste stream in amounts between about 1000 ppm to 10,000 ppm.

L'invention concerne un procédé qui permet de convertir de manière sélective le formaldéhyde contenu dans un flux aqueux de déchets organiques acides en formose pour l'essentiel, plutôt qu'en méthanol et en formate de métal alcalin. Cela consiste à engendrer une réaction avec uen solution basique (alcaline) concentrée en vue d'obtenir un pH au moins égal à 8,5 environ, puis à réchauffer la solution basique résultante jusqu'à une température d'environ 80 ·C au moins. La teneur du flux de déchets en formaldéhyde est comprise entre 1000 et 10000 mg/l environ.
