90B121/MW ABSTRACT TREATMENT OF GAS A gas stream comprising hydrogen sulphide is partially burned in a furnace 2 to form sulphur dioxide and water vapour. Some of the sulphur dioxide reacts with some of the residual hydrogen sulphide to form sulphur vapour and water vapour. Sulphur vapour is condensed out of the resulting gas mixture in condenser 14. Part of the hydrogen sulphide in the resulting gas mixture is then burned in a second furnace 16 to form more sulphur dioxide and water vapour. Some of the sulphur dioxide reacts with some of the residual hydrogen sulphide to form further sulphur vapour and water vapour. Sulphur vapour is then condensed in condenser 26. Oxygen for the combustion of the hydrogen sulphide is provided from an air separation plant. Nitrogen from the same air separation plant is employed at a pressure of at least 2 atmospheres to provide cooling for the condensers 14 and 26 and is thereby heated. The resulting heated nitrogen is then expanded in turbine 52 with the performance of external work.
