ABSTRACT A process for hydrogenatlng and thereafter removing sulphur impurities from a gas such as coke oven gas comprising passing the gas in one or more stages through a reactor containing a nickel molybdate catalyst at a temperature of from 150 to 420°C at a pressure of from 7 to 42 kg/cm2 gauge whereby said sulphur compounds are hydrogenated to produce hydrogen sulphide and thereafter the gas is contacted with an absorbent to remove said hydrogen sulphide.
