ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process and apparatus are described for the treatment of gaseous effluents containing noxious gases and steam from the sufluric acid digestion of titaniferous materials. In the stages of the digestion where the gaseous effluents are given off, these are passed upwardly through a condenser pipe and through a hollow cylindrical zone of swirling liquid within the pipe forming a descending condenser film, whereby the steam is at least partly condensed. According to the novel feature, during the entire duration of the digestion an alkaline liquid is sprayed into a stream of gaseous effluents passing through the hollow cylindrical zone to remove noxious gases from said effluents and the alkaline liquid which has contacted the gaseous effluents from each stage of the digestion is collected, with the alkaline liquids collected from the stages of digestion producing relatively small amount of gaseous effluents being at least partly recycled to the alkaline liquid sprays.
