ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Ground waters containing organic contaminants at low concentrations are treated in an expanded upflow bed by adding activated carbon particles and biomass materials so as to promote the growth of biomass on the particles and the adsorption of the contaminants thereon. The adsorbed contaminants are simultaneously desorbed and biodegraded. The desorption and degradation of the contaminants may be carried out under aerobic or anaerobic conditions.
