TREATMENT OF HEAVY PETROLEUM OIL WITH ANTI-COKING AGENT PRIOR TO THERMAL CRACKING ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In the thermal cracking of heavy petroleum oil (having an API specific gravity of not more than 25) in a tubular furnace, it has been found that the addition to the heavy oil of a small amount of an alkali treated particulate inorganic material containing an iron oxide and at least one refractory oxide, e.g. silica, alumina or magnesia, is very effective in reducing the formation of coke within the furnace tubes.
