TITLE : IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO THE TREATMENT OF HIDES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A composition, a method and a tool are disclosed for treating tanned hides. Flesh is removed from the hide by a novel tool comprising a rigid blade mounted on a handle and having a series of teeth projecting at one edge zone from a body of the blade, the teeth being generally V- shaped with chisel-like tips which are thin compared with the body portion of the blade. After the flesh is removed from the hide, it is tanned and a composition is applied preferably by brushing onto the dermis. The composition comprises a softening agent such as polyethylene glycol, a mineral oil and a surfactant which causes an unstable emulsion to be formed. The glycol migrates into the epidermis and the oil migrates into the dermis to act as a lubricant to produce a supple or soft hide. - 1 -
