ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel process is provided for the separation of components of base metal (e.g. Sb, Sn, Pb, Zn, Cu, N1, Fe or As) and silver from precious metal components in mineral concentrates. The process comprises reacting together gaseous hydrogen and chlorine so as to produce a flame providing a reaction zone having a temperature in excess of 900°C to 2500°C and passing into the reaction zone of the flame the mineral concentrate in finely divided particulate form. In this reaction, the silver and base metal in the concentrate are converted into their volatile chlorides, while the precious metal components in the concentrate remain in a solid, water-insolu- ble form. This enables the facile separation of the silver and base metal chlorides from the water insoluble solids in the reaction product.
