ABSTRACT Materials such as cellulose are rendered water repellent without objectionable degradation by contacting them with a non-laminar silicon halide vapor stream which reacts with hydroxyl groups to form a siloxane. The non-laminar flow of the halide vapor is maintained over the reaction interval of the surface being treated and is exhausted at a position where further exposure of the material to the treating vapor provides a negligible improvement in water repellency. This provides a suitable build-up of siloxane to achieve water repellency, and simultaneously prevents a cumulative hydrogen halide reac- tion which would otherwise have an unacceptably adverse effect on the long term strength of the treated materials.
