ABSTRACT OF INVENTION A process for treating scrap comprising the steps of wetting the scrap, passing the wetted scrap through a freezing tunnel, the wetted scrap being contacted with a gaseous fluid in a first region of the tunnel so as to precool the scrap, the scrap being cooled in a second region of the tunnel to a level at which at least a portion of the scrap becomes brittle, said cooling being effected by the introduction of cryogenic material into the second region of the tunnel, removing the scrap from the tunnel, and subjecting the scrap to mechanical fragmentation while it is at least partially brittle.
