The present invention relates to the discovery that certain adverse inflammatory responses, allergic diseases, undesired immune responses including transplant rejection and autoimmune disease, and other disease states, can be treated or prevented by modulating the binding of the particular chemokines SLC (secondary lymphoid chemokine), and MIP-3.beta. (macrophage inflammatory protein-3b), to immune system T cells and dendritic cells. The present invention is also related to methods for screening for therapeutic compounds useful in the treatment of SLC mediated and MIP-3.beta. mediated disorders, and to the compounds detected by such screens. Appropriate assay methodology is also disclosed.
