A process is used for the treatment of particulate wood, for example chips, shavings and the like. The process involves the addition of anhydrous ammonia to an enclosed pile of wet, particulate wood and allowing the ammonia to react with the pile over a period of four to five months. The resultant product is dry, highly absorptive wood chips that is used primarily asa soil conditioner.
