ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the enzymatic decomposition of collagen-containing hide or leather material which comprises treating the material with a proteolytic enzyme having an optimum enzymatic activity at a pH in the range of from 9 to 13, the treatment being carried out in an aqueous treatment medium at a pH within the said range and in the presence of urea whereby the said hide or leather material is at least partially decomposed. - 1 -
