A decoration is used for being displayed, and more particularly for decorating a tree. Each decoration may comprise a segment with an associated decorative element which may be selectively coupled in series with other segments to form a garland. Each decorative element includes a container for receiving a written message which relates to a particular event or memory of the owner of the decoration. Indicia is provided on each decorative element in association with the container and which is indicative of the written message contained therein. The indicia of each decorative element is configured differently than the indicia of other decorative elements in an assembled garland so as to relate to plural different events or memories associated with the owner.
