Disclosed is a seedling planter, particularly useful far tree seedlings, which has a main frame adapted to be hitched behind a pulling vehicle. The main frame is supported above the ground by the hitch and support wheels located near the rear of the planter. The support wheels are preferably mounted on a carriage which is pivotable relative to the frame thereby allowing the force exerted by a set of intermediate packing wheels to be varied. The seedling plantar uses a novel planting assembly which incorporates two primary structural members; a first planting assembly piece or link which is connected to the frame, and a planting arm which is pivotally connected to the first piece. The first piece is movable to vary the height of the pivot axis about which the planting arm rotates. The planting assembly also preferably includes a soil height level detection subsystem. The detected soil height level is used by a height control subsystem to automatically control the downward extension of the first planting assembly piece. The planting arm is thus positioned at a desired predetermined height above the soil as it is rotated into the ground to provide consistent planting depth. The planting arm mounts a seedling holder which clamps the seedlings along the rear edge of the planting arm. The seedling holder has jaws which are opened by interaction with a cam. Extension of the planting arm downwardly causes the seedling to be automatically grasped by the jaws. A lever arm actuator automatically opens the seedling holder when the planting arm is extended to thereby release the seedling into a short furrow formed in the soil by the extended planting arm. Also described are novel methods.
