In general the invention features mapping a digital data sequence into a signal point sequence for data transmission over a channel characterized by a non-ideal response, by selecting the signal point sequence from a subset of all possible signal point sequences based on the digital data sequence and upon the response, all possible signal point sequences in the subset lying in a fundamental region of a filtered trellis code, the fundamental region being other than a simple Cartesian product of finite-dimensional regions.

En général, le dispositif de l'invention met une suite de données numériques en correspondance dans une suite de points de signal afin de transmettre ces données sur un canal caractérisé par une réponse non idéale, en sélectionnant la séquence de points de signal dans un sous-ensemble de toutes les séquences de points de signal possibles en se basant sur la séquence de données numériques et sur ladite réponse, toutes les séquences de points de signal possibles de ce sous-ensemble se trouvant dans une région fondamentale d'un code en treillis filtré, cette région fondamentale n'étant pas que le simple produit cartésien de régions à nombre de dimensions fini.
