A fiber optic acoustic sensor that detects pressure waves from all incident angles features multiple mandrels orthogonally disposed to provide omni-directional sensing capability. The topology of the mandrels prevents frequency response drop-off characteristic of cylindrical sensors at wavelengths smaller than ? the length of the acoustic cylinder. The larger operating bandwidth and omni-directional sensing capability makes this fiber optic acoustic sensor a suitable choice for a wide range of applications.

L'invention concerne un capteur acoustique à fibre optique détectant des ondes de pression selon des angles d'incidence quelconques, ledit capteur comportant une pluralité de mandrins disposés orthogonalement permettant une détection omnidirectionnelle. La topologie des mandrins permet d'éviter la chute de la réponse en fréquence caractéristique des capteurs cylindriques aux longueurs d'onde inférieures à la moitié de la longueur du cylindre acoustique. Du fait de sa plus grande largeur de bande de fonctionnement et de sa capacité de détection omnidirectionnelle, ce capteur acoustique à fibre optique se prête à un large choix d'applications.
