ABSTRACT The invention provides a compound of the general formula Image I wherein R1 represents a lower straight-chain or branched mono or poly-hydroxyalkyl radical, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical or has the meaning given for R1 in which case R1 and R2 can be the same or different, R3 and R4 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical, and X represents a straight-chain or branched alkylene radical interrupted by one or more sulphur and/or selenium atoms and optionally interrupted, in addition, by one or more oxygen atoms, or represents a straight-chain or branched alkylene radical interrupted by a di-(lower alkyl)silyl group or a tetra-(lower alkyl)disiloxane group, processes for their manufacture and preparations contain- ing them. The compounds act as radio-opaque shading agents and can be used as X-ray contrast media. Aqueous solutions of the compounds can be used both in direct and in indirect lymphography. The compounds can also be used for visualising body cavities, the urinary tract, the gastro-intestinal tract, the joint cavities, the cerebrospinal and tracheobronchial system, for hystero- salpingography, gastroenteroscopy and for bronchoscopy.
