The present invention relates to polymeric medical articles comprising the antiinfective agents chlorhexidine and triclosan. It is based, at least in part, on the discovery that the synergistic relationship between these compounds permits the use of relatively low levels of both agents, and on the discovery that effective antimicrobial activity may be achieved when these compounds are comprised in either hydrophilic or hydrophobic polymers. It is also based on the discovery that chlorhexidine free base and triclosan, used together, are incorporated into polymeric medical articles more efficiently. Medical articles prepared according to the invention offer the advantage of preventing or inhibiting infection while avoiding undesirably high release of antiinfective agent, for example into the bloodstream of a subject.

Cette invention porte sur des articles polymères à usage médical comportant des agents anti-infectieux, la chlorhexidine et le triclosan. Elle se fonde, partiellement du moins, sur la découverte que les relations synergiques existant entre ces composés permettent d'utiliser ces deux agents sous des quantités relativement faibles ainsi que sur la découverte qu'une activité anti-microbienne efficace peut être obtenue lorsque ces composés sont contenus dans des polymères hydrophiles ou des polymères hydrophobes. Elle repose également sur la découverte qu'une base libre de chlorhexidine et du triclosan, utilisés conjointement, sont incorporés dans des articles à usage médical de manière plus productive. Des articles à usage médical préparés selon les données de cette invention ont pour avantage de prévenir une infection ou de l'inhiber tout en évitant une libération indésirable à un niveau élevé d'agent anti-infectieux, par exemple dans la circulation sanguine d'un sujet.
