Abstract Novel 2, 4, 5-Trifluoroisophthalonitrile is useful as a starting material for the manufacture of medicines, agrichemcials and other industrial chemicals; and particularly for the production of 2, 4, 5- trifluoroisophthalic acid by the hydrolysis of 2, 4, 5- trifluoroisophthalonitrile with sulphuric acid under specified conditions. 2, 4, 5-trifluoroisophthalonitrile is prepared by the reaction of tetrafluoroiso- phthalonitrile with a metal hydride at a temperature of between -80 and 100°C in an aprotic solvent.
