A B S T R A C T The invention resides in the field of certain trifluoromethane sulfonate esters and their use in polymer compositions having a reduced tendency to burn when they are ignited. The invention is directed to char-forming polymer compositions prepared by adding trifluoromethane sulfonate esters to polymerized ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic anhydrides or to polymerized monovinylidene aromatic monomers. The advantage obtained is that there is an in- creased tendency for char formation, which reduces the tendency for the fire to spread.
