ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A trifluoromethyl-2-(thio)pyxidone compound having the formula: Image wherein X represents a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, Y1 and Y2 each represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a tri- fluoromethyl group, and Z represents an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, in which either Y1 or Y2 represents a trifluoromethyl group, and the other of Y1 or Y2 represents a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, and when X and Y2, or X and Y1 represent a hydrogen atom at the same time, then Z represents a sulfur atom, and a process for preparing the same. These compounds are useful as intermediates for the production of agricultural chemicals and dyes and are more easily prepared on a commercial scale as compound to analogous compounds of the prior art.
