ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Carboxylated styrene allyl alcohol copolymers are prepared by re- action of trimellitic anhydride and a hydroxy copolymer under controlled conditions to minimize polyester formation. The hydroxy copolymer is a co- polymer of styrene or a substituted styrene and allyl alcohol or methallyl alcohol containing from 1.8 to 10 weight percent hydroxyl. At least one hydroxy group per molecule and preferably 20-80 percent of the hydroxyls of the hydroxy copolymer are reacted with trimellitic anhydride. The carboxy- lated styrene allyl alcohol copolymers can be used in aqueous or organic solvent solution in adhesive and surface coating applications.
