ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A wood grinding device for grinding and pulverizing wooden objects and materials into wood chips. A trough into which the wooden materials are deposited is provided with a reciprocating action to transfer the contents of the through to a hammer and anvil unit. The hammer and anvil unit includes a flywheel which is contained within an enclosure beneath the trough. Rotatably mounted along the perimeter of the flywheel is a plurality of hammers. The interior perimeter of the enclosure is formed with a plurality of anvils which coact with the hammers to pulverize the contents transferred from the trough. The reciprocating action of the trough exposes the full length of the trough to the hammer and anvil unit. In addition, dual lateral openings are provided in the enclosure which, in cooperation with a bi-directional capability of the flywheel, allows an operator to select the direction of rotation of the flywheel on the basis of which lateral opening to use, or alternatively, to selectively subject one edge of the hammers to the contents of the trough in order to promote more even wear of the hammers.
