A conventional truck box having a box floor, side walls and a pivotal tail gate is supplemented by a box extender formed from a molded plastics panel and a reinforcing support frame. The plastics panel includes a horizontal upper wall, a horizontal lower wall and two raised ribs along the sides closing the junction between the upper and lower walls. The panel is thus fully closed apart from an open front end which defines a pocket into which the tail gate is inserted in the lowered position to fully contain the tail gate while traveling. The reinforcement frame includes a pair of parallel side rails each extending along the length of the panel and forwardly from the front edge of the panel over the top surface of the box floor for engagement with collars welded to the box floor forwardly of the rear edge. This provides a strong and stable structure which has an attractive appearance.
