A method and apparatus for sending an e-mail message between a public communication system user and a vehicle operator using a private communication system. E-mail messages are sent to an interface, the interface comprising accounting means for checking and adjusting an account associated with the vehicle operator identified by the e-mail message. The interface further comprises means for translating the e-mail message into a format compatible with either the private communication system or the public communication system, depending on the destination of the e-mail message. The interface further comprises means for sending and receiving the e-mail message to and from the private communication system and to and from the public communication system.
