A bale carrier has a base with two bale tracks for carrying rows of bales side by side. A bale pickup loads bales on the adjacent track and a bale transfer mechanism transfers bales from one track to the other. The base has a substantially unobstructed bottom so that the carrier can be mounted on a truck or trailer with minimal modification of the vehicle, and using a standard carrier construction. The bale pickup operating mechanism includes a linkage projecting upwardly from the pickup and an hydraulic cylinder extending across the front of the base, above the base, for pulling the linkage across thebase. The pickup can deposit a third bale on top of two bales arranged side by side in the two tracks, at the receiving station. The pickup preferably will collapse to a transport position above the base. Two side wings extend along the sides of the base for retaining bales on the bale carrier and are mounted onthe base for movement to a transport position projecting upwardly from the side base. In the transport position the carrier meets the legal width requirements for highway transport. The carrier can be equipped with a square bale pickup for loading large square bales.
