A tundish impact pad comprises a body of refractory material capable of withstanding contact with molten steel, the body comprising a base (15) having an impact surface for molten steel, an outer sidewall (17) extending upwardly from the impact surface, the outer sidewall extending around the base to completely enclose it, an annular body portion (18) connected to the sidewall and providing a top surface substantially parallel to the impact surface (19) and defining an opening into which molten steel can be poured, the lower face of the annular body portion and the inner face of the sidewall (17) defining a recess (21) having an undercut portion extending continuously around and above the impact surface, wherein a first portion (22) of the top surface (19) is at a lower level (19A) than the remainder of the top surface and the recess beneath the first portion of the top surface (19) is of smaller cross-section than the remainder of the recess, a temporary shield (24A, B) of material destructible by the molten metal being positioned on or adjacent to the lower surface portion to reduce or eliminate its height loss relative to the remainder of the top surface.
L'invention porte sur un coussin d'impact de panier de coulée comportant un corps de matériau réfractaire pouvant supporter le contact avec l'acier fondu et comprenant lui-même une base (12) munie d'une surface d'impact pour l'acier fondu, une paroi latérale extérieure (17) s'étendant vers le haut à partir de la surface d'impact et l'entourant entièrement, et une partie annulaire (18) du corps reliée à la paroi latérale et présentant une surface supérieure sensiblement parallèle à la surface (19) d'impact et percée d'une ouverture où l'on verse l'acier fondu. La face inférieure de la partie annulaire du corps et la face intérieure de la paroi (17) délimitent une cavité (21) présentant une partie dégagée s'étendant en continu autour et sur la surface d'impact. La première partie (22) de la surface supérieure (19) est à un niveau plus bas que le reste de ladite surface, et la cavité (19A) située sous la première partie de la surface supérieure (19) présente une section transversale plus faible que le reste de la cavité. On dispose un bouclier temporaire (24A, B) d'un matériau détruit par le métal fondu sur ou à côté du de la partie inférieure de la surface pour réduire ou éliminer ses pertes de hauteur par rapport au reste de la surface supérieure.
