In measuring the turbidity of a liquid, especially for determin- ing water clarity in a water purification process in which after the ad- dition of flocculant the water is centrifuged, light is emitted as a dif- fuse beam from a light source (11) and the intensity of light reflected from gas bubbles in the liquid is detected by a photosensor (12). The light source and photosensor are incorporated in a probe (6) having transparent cylindrical wall (7) and sealed within a housing (1) con- fining a liquid receiving chamber (2) by a pair of seals (9) between which is formed a space (10) containing cleaning solution. An actua- for (18) is coupled to the probe (6) for reciprocating he probe relative to the housing and seals (9) for cleaning, deposits from the, wall (7).
