"TURBOCHARGER" ABSTRACT A turbocharger to provide pressurised combustion air for an internal combustion engine from which exhaust gases drive a turbine wheel which rotates a shaft driving the air compressor. Rotating with the shaft is a bush having a flange at right angles to the shaft and having a counter-thrust surface facing a tapered-land thrust bearing on one side of a plate. The tapered lands form an annular array of successive bearing sectors about an aperture which receives the bush. A slight step extending radially, separates the high end of each tapered- land or sector from the adjacent low end of the adjacent sector. A groove surrounds the array of sectors. Rebates or retrenchments opening into the groove eliminate a radially outer portion of the high end of each sector and a radially outer portion of the low end of the adjacent sector. At the high end of each sector each retrenchment has a side or edge at an angle to the radial direction so that at each high end contact between the thrust bearing and the counter-thrust surface on the conically rotating shaft is (instead of area contact) reduced substantially to line contact thereby reducing frictional retardation of the shaft. Notches extending radially from the aperture to part way across the sectors facilitate lubrication.
