ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention provides a twist drill whose cutting surfaces can solely be shaped by plane grinding and an apparatus for grinding the same which allows for easy setting of the ground surfaces. The twist drill comprises plane cutting edges and lands which are symmetrical about a shaft line. Center edges inside said cutting edges have a pointed end and make contact at an obtuse angle with a workpiece. The lands make an acute angle with the shaft line. The grinding apparatus com- prises a rotatable coupling which slidably engages with a holder, a clutch mechanism which comprises a sleeve which is located between the holder and a chuck head, and a crank mechanism which engages with the sleeve to change its rotational movement into movement between the chuck head and a bed.
