It is known to use static mixers in heat exchange devices. Typically the static mixers are comprised of a number of short elements having a high degree of twist per unit length. These types of devices tend to produce high pressure drops across the device leading to phase separation and possibly inversion when used with two phase systems. The present invention seeks to overcome this drawback by using a continuous twisted tape shear device having a relatively low twist ratio.
