ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Heavy hydrocarbon feedstocks are hydroprocessed using a synergistic two-stage catalyst combination. The first stage catalyst comprises at least one group VIb or group VIII metal, metal oxide, or metal sulfide on a porous support and has an average pore diameter of 60-150 .ANG.. The second stage catalyst comprises at least one group VIb or VIII metal, metal oxide, or metal sulfide on a porous catalyst support and has an average pore diameter of 30-70 .ANG.. Preferably the first stage catalyst has at least 40% pore volume present as pores having diameters greater than 80 .ANG. and the second porous catalyst has at least 50% pore volume present as pores having diameters smaller than 80 .ANG..
