A two-camera over-the-belt optical character recognition (OCR) system (10) for reading the destination addresses on parcels (14) carried on a conveyor belt (12). The parcels (14) bear an orientation defining fluorescent ink fiduciary mark (34) that is typically stamped on the parcel in the same area as the destination address (33). The fiduciary mark (34) is located approximately in the center of the destination address block (32) and oriented in the same direction as the underlying destination address. The first camera (19), a low resolution CCD camera, captures an image of the fiduciary mark (34). A host computer (30) stores an image of the fiduciary mark, determines the position and orientation of the fiduciary mark, and defines a region of interest (40) about the fiduciary mark. The second camera (22), a high resolution CCD camera, captures a grey-scale image of the conveyor (12) and the parcels (14) carried on the conveyor. The host computer (30) extracts and stores the portion of the high resolution image that is within the region of interest (40) including the text defining the destination address of the parcel. The host computer (30) then rotates and displays the text image and/or transmits the text image to a text reader.

Ces paquets portent une marque fiduciaire (34) d'orientation, imprimée à l'encre fluorescente généralement dans la même zone que l'adresse de destination (33). Cette marque fiduciaire (34) figure sensiblement au centre de l'emplacement d'adresse de destination (32), orientée dans le même sens que cette adresse sous-jacente. Une première caméra (19), à DCC à faible résolution, capte une image de la marque fiduciaire (34). Un ordinateur central (30) enregistre cette image, détermine la position et l'orientation de la marque fiduciaire et définit une zone d'intérêt (40) autour de celle-ci. Une deuxième caméra (22), à DCC à haute résolution, capte une image à échelle de gris du convoyeur (12) et des paquets (14) qu'il transporte. L'ordinateur central (30) extrait et enregistre la partie d'image à haute résolution se trouvant dans la zone d'intérêt (40), y compris le texte de l'adresse de destination figurant sur ce paquet. L'ordinateur central (30) fait ensuite pivoter et affiche une image du texte et/ou la transmet à un lecteur de textes.
