The present invention relates to peptide antagonists which specifically prevent laminin interaction with nidogen. Laminin is a major cell-adhesive and structural protein of basement membranes and other extracellular structures occurring as various isoforms of 600-900 kDa, and contains a single high affinity binding site for the 150 kDa basement membrane protein nidogen. The peptide antagonists of this invention may be applied to in vitro studies of organ development or as therapeutic agents for clinical use.
