ABSTRACT The present invention discloses a surge arrester having two truncated-conical main electrodes in the form of two domes facing each other and forming flat, active electrode surfaces. The domes are inserted in a gas-tight manner into the ends of a tubular insulating element which is divided centrally by an annular metal disc which is inserted in a gas-tight manner and forms, an annular electrode. The annular disc and the main electrodes provide two discharge paths such that on both sides of the central aperture of the annular electrode and on the flat active electrode surfaces of the main electrodes, there is a narrow metal ring such that the annular and main electrodes form hollow electrodes which are provided with an activating layer.
