A two piece tubular side step for a motor vehicle includes a first tubular component having a built in threaded aperture at one end. A second tubular component is provided having a sidewall defining an interior cavity with a rotatably mounted bolt positioned along an axis of the second tubular component at one end. The bolt has a head portion positioned within the interior cavity of the second tubular component and a protruding threaded male portion. An access opening is provided through the sidewall of the second tubular component into the interior cavity adjacent to the head portion of the bolt. A tool can be inserted through the access opening into the interior cavity to rotate the bolt to engage the threaded male portion of the second tubular component with the threaded aperture of the first tubular component.
