ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Two-quadrant converter, method of operating a two- quadrant converter and its use as the control element of an energy store A two-quadrant converter (8) having a connected superconducting magnetic memory (L) can be used as a chopper circuit or as an actuator for stabilizing networks and for short-term bridging of power failures, in particular in connection with installations for uninterrupted power supply. In this arrangement, the two-quadrant converter (8) is connected on the input side to an intermediate d.c. circuit of a converter whose intermediate circuit voltage (Ud) is stabilised by an indirect capacitor (C). The magnetic memory (L) is charged and discharged, respectively with energy in cyclic intervals, i.e. in conjunction with interposed free-wheeling intervals. Charging takes place via triggered thyristors (V1) and (V2), discharging via conducting diodes (D1) and (D2), with blocked thyristors (V1, V2). In order to reduce the switching rate of the semiconductor valves (V1, V2, D1, D2), and thus the energy losses, the free-wheeling of a current (IL) through the magnetic memory (L) is alternately conducted via the thyristor (V2) and the diode (D2) or via the diode (D1) and the thyristor (V1). When the magnetic memory (L) is in a charged state and is to be neither charged nor discharged over lengthy intervals, its current (IL) can be conducted in the free wheel via a closed mechanical switch (S3) connected in parallel. Mechanical switches (S1, S2) in parallel with the diode (D1) and the thyristor (V2) can unload these semi- conductor valves or take their place. (Fig. 2)
