-23- Abstract of the Disclosure Two-Speed Planetary Gear Mechanism A compact planetary gear mechanism (10) includes an axially shiftable ring gear (72) to provide a direct drive mode or a speed reduction ratio mode between an input sun gear (64) and an output planet carrier (74). In a first embodiment, the ring gear (72) is urged in a first direction by a compressible spring apparatus (119) to a conjoint coupled relationship with the sun gear (64) for direct drive. The ring gear (72) is urged by a hydraulically actuated annular piston (134) into a fixed relationship with a stationary coupling (26) in opposition to the compressible spring apparatus (119) in the reduction mode. A second embodiment has no spring apparatus (119) so that the annular piston (134) is hydraulically biased in either axial direction for positively shifting the ring year (72).
