A two stage carbonizer places as much heat as possible into the gas streams entering the carbonizer to drive off volatile matter and reduce tars and oils by thermal cracking which is enhanced by the addition of sorbent. The carbonizer operates as a fluidized bed with a combustor providing flue gas as one fluidizing medium and preheated air as the other. This allows the coal to be devolatilized and the tars and oils to be thermally cracked due to the direct contact with the coal and hot flue gas. The device is designed to operate at high pressures from about 12-20 atmospheres.

Un carbonisateur à deux étages communique autant de chaleur que possible dans les courants gazeux qui entrent dans le carbonisateur pour chasser les matières volatiles et réduire les goudrons et les huiles par thermocraquage dont le rendement est amélioré par l'addition d'un agent de sorption. Le carbonisateur fonctionne comme un lit fluidisé dans lequel une chambre de combustion fournissant le gaz de combustion comme l'un des milieux de fluidisation et de l'air préchauffé comme l'autre. Le contact direct entre le charbon et les gaz de combustion chauds permet d'extraire les matières volatiles du charbon et de réaliser le thermocraquage des goudrons et des huiles. Le dispositif est conçu pour fonctionner à des pressions d'environ 12-20 atmosphères.
